GOING BEYOND THE SURFACE

Blume’s has always been conscious about the way we manufacture, recycle and our ‘carbon footprint’.  We are excited to expand this mind-set to the products we offer.

Solid Surface & Quartz:  Offering colors manufactured using pre consumer recycled materials including but not limited to glass, plastic and paper/cardboard.

Wood: Reclaimed Wood, Bamboo and Sustainable Forest Practices on all offered species.

Up to 5 categories of LEED Points are available for most of the Green Products available on the market. 

Products

HanStone® by Hanwha:

Hanwha L&C Surfaces is committed to being a pro-environment company creating eco-friendly products for the marketplace.  They focus their product research and development, manufacturing approach and recycling efforts toward demonstrating how they value the environment and wish to protect its future for generations to come. 

A few of the ways Hanwha L&C Surfaces implements their goals in their North American plant:

  • 100% of production water is recycled at

  • Installation of an air purification system collects all dust within the plant and sophisticated HVAC system. 

  • Hot oil-based heating system to generate heat

  • Slab scraps are recycled with a local landscape firm

  • Rubber molds are broken down by a local company to repurpose into weeding and gardening products.

The LEED Points available for HanStone include:

MR Credit 3:            
All HanStone® products can be re-used. 

MR Credit 4:
Qualifying Colors consisting of a Minimum 24% Pre-consumer recycled glass content:  (Swatches)
Specchio White, Passion Rouge, Mystic Blue, Obsidian Black

MR Credit 5:
All HanStone® colors fabricated by Blume’s qualify due to Blume’s being within 500 miles of the North American plant.

EQ Credit 4.1:
All HanStone® materials can qualify if the VOC content of adhesives is less than the current limit specified in SCAQMD Rule #1168.

ID Credit 1 Innovation in Design:
All HanStone® products are both GREENGUARD certified for Children & Schools as well as indoor air quality and therefore may be able to contribute to this credit.

DuPont Surfaces

DuPont has broadened its sustainability commitments beyond internal footprint reduction to include market driven targets.  DuPont works in partnership with other industry leaders and is a member of many environmental organizations, including: the United States Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), Chicago Climate Exchange, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

The LEED Points available for Corian & Zodiaq are as follows:

MR Credit 3:
Corian® can be repaired and refinished to its original condition as well as re-used.  Zodiaq® can also be re-used.

MR Credit 4:
DuPont Corian® Terra Collection has been certified to contain a minimum of 6% or 13% pre-consumer recycled content:

Colors Containing 6%: (swatches)
Whisper, Sahara, Raffia, Granola, Bethany, Acorn, Oat, Canvas, Blue Pebble, Willow, Suede, Serene Sage, Platinum, Shale, Cocoa Brown, Medea,
Pine, Moss, Green Tea, Matterhorn

Colors Containing 13%: (swatches)
Dove Fawn, Gray Fieldstone, Rice Paper, Silver Birch, Tranquil, White Jasmine

DuPont Zodiaq® Terra Collection offers four colors with a minimum of 50% pre –consumer recycled glass.  These colors are:  (swatches)
Calm Spring, Moroccan Morning, Mossy Green, Warm Taupe

MR Credit 5:
The majority of Corian® and Zodiaq® colors are manufactured in Quebec Canada. When fabricated by Blume’s, these colors will qualify for the Regional Materials credit.

EQ Credit 4.1:
The joint adhesive and silicone sealant used in Corian® and Zodiaq® applications are GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified and can be considered low-emitting materials. 

Blume’s also fabricates many other products containing recycled content such as CaesarStone Quartz, IceStone, Vetrazzo and Paperstone.

LEEDS

LEED does not certify an individual product, but rather awards points based on meeting the specific performance standards.  Commercial and residential building types qualify for LEED benefits.  The LEED Credits available for the qualifying products fabricated by Blume’s may include:

MR Credit 3 Materials Reuse:  Up to 2 Points
“To reuse building materials and products to reduce demand for virgin materials and reduce waste, thereby lessening impacts associated with the extraction and processing of virgin resources.”

MR Credit 4 Materials Reuse:  Up to 2 Points
“To increase demand for building products that incorporate recycle content material, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials.” “Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus ½ of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total value of the materials in the project.”

MR Credit 5 Regional Materials: Up to 2 Points
“To increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.” 
“Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total materials value.  If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted, harvest, or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by weight) must contribute to the regional value.”

EQ Credit 4.1 Low-Emitting Materials-Adhesives & Sealants: 1 Point
“To reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants.” i.e.: VOC content of adhesives.

                        Innovation in Design: Up to 5 Points for NC & CS
                                                                   Up to 4 Points for Schools
                        Exemplary Performance: Up to 3 Points
“To provide design teams and projects the opportunity to achieve exceptional performance above the requirements set by the LEED Green Building rating System and/or innovative performance in Green Building categories not specifically addressed by the LEED Green Building Rating System.”
